Essential wardrobe items are those that you know you are going to be returning to again and again because they are just so versatile. You love them because you are always finding new ways to style them and when they wear out or start to look shabby you rush right out and buy a replacement because life without them is simply unthinkable. Here are a few items that certainly
deserve a permanent place in your collection of summer clothing.
White Shirts
Crisp white shirts look great. The physics may say that wearing black will actually keep you cooler, but psychologically white makes you feel cool. It certainly looks cool. White is definitively versatile, and the same white shirt can serve as a casual cover over your swimsuit or classy eveningwear paired with a midi dress. Tie it at the front with denim cut offs or tuck it into wide leg trousers.
Midi dresses
Just so we’re clear about the definition here, a midi dress is a garment with a hem that ends half-way between the knee and the ankle. For the summer you want something in a light fabric because one of the joys of the midi dress is that it allows your body to breathe easily. Lovely and light to wear, you can go spaghetti strap, off the shoulder or no sleeve at all. For a casual look choose a pastel color and pair it with your hair up, sunnies, sandals and a cross body bag. Darker colors look more formal and if you pair your midi with heels, you’re good to go for an evening on the town. Experiment cinching your waist with a belt and see how it changes your outfit.
Sunglasses
Sunglasses are an essential summer accessory, not just because they look great but also because you need them to protect your eyes from dangerous UV radiation. Round glasses are right on trend this summer, as are the wraparounds. The most important thing to do is to shop around to find a pair that suit you best. Maybe you’ll choose a pair of iconic Ray-Ban Round Flash lenses, or go big and bling with Dolce Gabana’s DG2205, or seriously funky with the thick, thick acetate of a pair by Miu. There’s a whole range of choices, so enjoy.
T-shirts
Simplicity itself and the ultimate versatile garment and yes, blue jeans and a white T is still a great look. The standard is of course a crew neck, but there’s also V necks, deep V necks, bateau necklines, which run from shoulder to shoulder and collared. Then there’s bodycon or boxy, oversize or crop. High waisted shorts
High waisted shorts have been around since the forties and it looks like they are here to stay. They elongate the legs and highlight the waist. They compliment all kinds of body types, and they’re a favourite for many celebrities too!
