In special Diwali message, Trump reiterates his commitment to religious liberty

Washington, DC, October 27, 2019 – For the third consecutive year, President Donald Trump celebrated Diwali, the popular Indian festival of lights, in the White House by lighting the ceremonial ‘diya’ (traditional lamp).
It was a private event held Thursday afternoon in the Oval Office with attendees being primarily Indian-Americans serving in his administration.
Celebrating Diwali is an annual tradition that Trump has steadfastly maintained ever since he occupied the White House in 2017 – a heart-warming gesture for Indians around the globe.
In a special message released by the White House on Friday, the president reiterated his commitment to religious freedom.
“The observance of Diwali throughout America is an important reminder of the significance of one of our nation’s core tenets – religious liberty”, he said. “My administration will continue to defend the rights enshrined in our constitution that enable people of all faiths to worship according to their beliefs and conscience”, he pledged.
Trump noted, “For many Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists in the United States and around the globe, this sacred period is an opportunity to commemorate the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Throughout this holy time, members of these faiths engage in prayer, light diyas and lanterns, and partake in traditional feasts and other festivities with friends and family”.
“As Diwali commences, Melania and I wish those observing the festival of lights a blessed and happy celebration”, he said. “We pray that this year’s observance brings love, joy and eternal peace”.
