On April 4, 2014, Westgate Realty Group and the Vietnamese community sponsored a Q&A event with Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia to talk about the economic hardships currently facing small business owners. Grace Han Wolf of Herndon City Council and Cindy Shao of Asian Chamber of Commerce also made an appearance.
In his speech, Sen. Kaine credited the increasing immigrant population in Virginia for its current level of prosperity. He emphasized that Asian-Americans be proud of their accomplishments and the benefits they’ve brought to the state, as their presence has led to higher median income, higher education levels, and low unemployment in Virginia.
Sen. Kaine also stated that in Virginia, agencies such as VDOT is providing education to small business owners of the methods to obtain government contracts, and on upgrading a small business to a medium sized business.
Because more foreign banks are moving their headquarters to Virginia, Kaine said, it is becoming easier to obtain the necessary funding to improve businesses. In addition, Sen. Kaine also emphasized US’s H-1 visas, which are given to welders as the country is currently short on finding people with these skills. He emphasized the need for people to learn skills that would find them employment in the current market.
