Washington, DC – This year’s JACL (Japanese American Citizens League) Convention celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 which formally apologized to Japanese Americans who were interned during World War II. The Civil Liberties Act also provided $20,000 in reparations for Japanese American families. A highlight of the conference was a reception at the National Archives to view the original Civil Liberties Act.
“It was an emotional [conference] for both those who were instrumental in getting the legislation passed and those who were interned,” said conference chair Floyd Mori.
The JACL took the opportunity of hosting the convention in DC to show participants over 100 offices on Capitol Hill. The conference also hosted over 100 youth to participate in a leadership luncheon. Mori said these youth are instrumental in carrying on the grassroots efforts of the generations passed.
