Corazon Foley, Founding Chairman of the Fairfax County Asian American History Project (FCAAHP), has commended the partnership between the Asian Pacific America community and national and local corporations.
This is a view shared by other organizations like OCA and the South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), which point out that without the partnership–some of which are on a sustained, yearly basis–many worthy projects would not have even gotten off the ground.
Ms. Foley said the current phase of their project enjoys the support of principal sponsors Cox Communications and Bob Nakamoto. Nakamoto of Amour LLC (bnakamoto@amourllc.com) is a successful Japanese American in Fairfax County, Virginia. A Korean War veteran, Nakamoto is the founder of the highly successful BASE Company.
The business community’s support is crucial because of the long-term nature of the project. Ms. Foley said, “After we publish the books on Vietnamese American Youth (Volume 3A) and Korean American Youth (Volume 3B), we will start the work on Volume 3C, about the Filipino American Youth.”
Recently, the FCAAHP group held two Roundtable Discussions on the current project: On July 13 at the Burke Centre Library in Virginia and on July 20 at Pohick Regional Library.
The Roundtable#1 video was posted on YouTube. It is a “window into the fascinating exchange of views on the aspirations, contributions, heritage and history of Vietnamese American Youth of Fairfax County, Virginia.”
The Roundtable discussion was led by Vy Nguyen, whose book on the Vietnamese American youth will be the third in the FCAAHP series.
Participants discussed their perspectives on second generation Vietnamese Americans, regarding growing up in Fairfax County, inspirations and participation in the arts and sports life of the community, and various means of civic engagement by the Vietnamese American youth in the area.
Volume 3 on Asian American Youth has been disaggregated because the stories of young Asian Americans are so rich and so important to the future of Fairfax County, Virginia. The group thanked Vy Nguyen for her leadership in the Vietnamese American Youth Project and Soo Yee for her leadership in the Korean American Youth Project.
