It’s a Wednesday morning in Reston, Va. The 30 plus networkers sitting in the conference room at Keller Williams Realty are laughing and clapping in unison as a young man in his 20s is dancing and making silly expressions at the front of the room. The laughter is infectious and pretty soon, everyone is smiling.
“Are you happy?” the man asks.
“Yes!” the crowd choruses.
“Why are you happy? How does this happen? It’s because our thoughts become things. I had this thought in my head to be happy and it became a reality.”
The young man speaking is Robert Lee, founder of BeHappyThoughts in the DC metro area. He is on a mission to make us more aware of the power they have over lives by the way they perceive the world. He wants to show how people are all in control of our destiny and the possibilities they have for making their communities a better place.
But Lee wasn’t always so happy. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a BS in finance and joined McLean Asset Management after his graduation. Six months in however, he was overwhelmed with a feeling of immense cynicism.
The financial world is shrouded in mystery for the average Joe. Many of us don’t know how money flows, what creates it and who controls it. But in 2011, the walls surrounding the financial institutions crumbled and in the rubble, Americans finally saw that the keepers of our money were not all they were cracked up to be. The U.S. financial markets were failing; the Euro was in a crisis. Scandals like the Lehman brothers’ investor fraud made headline news. And Lee was wondering what he had gotten himself into.
Lee had always been interested in psychology but he ended up in finance because of the solidity and certainty that the financial world of numbers seemed to provide. But he soon decided that he needed to look for an alternative.
For the next few years he switched careers and embarked on a journey of self-healing and meditative experiences with various reiki masters, tai chi teachers, and hypnotists.
In March 2012, Lee visited his first hypnotherapist who was recommended to him by a friend. And things finally clicked for him.
“It was one of the most relaxing experiences I’ve ever had. It was a moment of clarity…and I [was] able to imagine my past, present, and future with pronounced clarity,” said Lee.
Hypnotherapy is a complex branch of psychology in which patients are put in a highly relaxed state of mind to access their subconscious mind. For many of us, the impetus behind many of our actions lies in our subconscious. It is the home of many of our deeply rooted beliefs, habits, and fears.
After his first hypnotherapy session, Lee pursued his certification in the Quantum Healing Hypnosis mode. This year, he opened BeHappyThoughts and began seeing clients.
“We need better healthcare in this world,” said Lee. “We have a symptomatic treatment model rather than a preventative and maintenance model.” Lee hopes that his hypnotherapy practice will improve the emotional and spiritual well-being of everyone that he treats.

Self Hypnosis Techniques
Hypnosis, like meditation can be used as a powerful stress management tool. Follow the steps below to practice self-hypnosis:
First, decide if you want to use affirmations as part of your self-hypnosis session (you will still be able to relax deeply if you do not use them). If you do, then prepare the affirmations you want to use before you start the session, as you will not want to think about them once you have reached a state of deep relaxation! Next, find somewhere comfortable and quiet, and sit down. Now, relax your body. A good way of doing this is to close your eyes and imagine waves of relaxation running down your body from your scalp downwards, washing out stress. Let the waves run in time with your breathing, first washing down over your head, then your neck, then your torso, then arms, and finally your legs. Feel the muscles in your body relaxing as the waves of relaxation wash over them. The next step is to use suggestion to deepen the state of relaxation. This can be as simple as saying something like: “I am feeling relaxed and comfortable to yourself. With every breath I am becoming more relaxed and more comfortable…” Alternatively, use the traditional approach of suggesting sleepiness: “I am tired and sleepy. I can feel the heaviness in my arms and legs. I am more and more tired…” Once you feel completely relaxed, use the affirmations you have prepared. Mix these in with the relaxation suggestions. Typical self-hypnosis sessions can last between 15 and 25 minutes; however, they can last for as long as you like.
