President Obama met with business leaders on June 25 to discuss plans for immigration reform.
The President stated that the current immigration system in place now is “broken,” and called for systems to be put in place so that immigrants can be a part of the above board economy, as opposed to the low-board economy.
He cited the bipartisan bill currently circulating in the Senate as promising, because it represents a compromise on issues pertinent to immigration. The bill adheres to the core principles the President says are needed for comprehensive immigration reform, including strong border security; holding employers accountable to following the rules, and providing earned citizenship for 11 million immigrants currently in the country.
President Obama stated that he would like for the bill, s. 744, to be pushed through before the end of summer break.
Said the President, “And if we get this done — when we get this done — I think every business leader here feels confident that they’ll be in a stronger position to continue to innovate, to continue to invest, to continue to create jobs, and ensure that this continues to be the land of opportunity for generations to come.”
